Evelyn Sharp, of Ord, Nebraska, earned fame as the world’s youngest commercial pilot.
She soloed in 1936 and obtained her commercial license in 1938, then
barnstormed Nebraska. In 1942 Sharp joined the Army Air Force’s elite
Women’s Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS). This skilled group of female
pilots flew all types of military aircraft from factories to air bases and
shipping points, everywhere except combat zones. On April 3, 1944, at the age of twenty-four, Sharp was killed when
her P-38 fighter crashed on take-off. She was only three flights away from
her fifth rating, the highest then available to women.
